Plot: As the half-blood son of a Greek god, Percy Jackson has newly-discovered powers he can’t control, a destiny he doesn’t want, and a mythology textbook’s worth of monsters on his trail. When Zeus’s master lightning bolt is stolen and Percy becomes the prime suspect, he has to find and return the bolt to prove his innocence and prevent a war between the gods. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the thief. He must travel to the Underworld and back; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and come to terms with the father who abandoned him. Adapted from the best-selling book The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan and featuring a thrilling original rock score, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is an action-packed mythical adventure “worthy of the gods” (Time Out New York). [via Concord Theatricals]

Director’s Note: Rick Riordan strove to make Camp Half-Blood feel as diverse as the world around us as well as a safe haven for those whom society has deemed ‘weird.’ With that in mind, please audition for any and every role you see yourself in, whether or not your identity aligns with the canon gender, body type, ability, or look of the character! The writers have given blanket permission to performers to adjust pronouns as desired and I’m willing to take full advantage of that! You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, so please give yourself the chance. (All characters are listed with their prewritten voice part, but adjustments can be made!)

Characters:

Percy Jackson- a teenager with a quick temper and an even quicker wit. Sarcastic, compassionate, absolutely out of his depth. Percy is onstage virtually the whole show, so this role requires a massive amount of stamina and presence. [Musical Theatre tenor with a bit of a pop-punk flavor, strong mover with a high amount of combat]

Annabeth Chase- wise beyond her years, and definitely the smartest person in the room. Cautious, strategic, protective. Annabeth is a tough girl who isn’t afraid to put others on the line to get to her goals, but she also desperately wants to be seen for who she is. [Musical Theatre Mezzo-Soprano, strong mover with a high amount of combat]

Grover Underwood- sweet and kind, the glue that holds our trio together. Friendly, nervous, self-deprecating. Grover is the proverbial bestie, and isn’t afraid to clown around, but will need a delicate touch for his more heart-wrenching moments. [Folksy Baritenor voice, strong mover with very little combat]

Luke- the charismatic camp counselor we all wish we had growing up. Charming, disarming, manipulative. Luke has a lot of depth and needs to be able to pull off a very wide range of emotions believably (will also play various other ensemble roles including Percy’s Smelly Stepfather, Gabe) [Musical Theatre Tenor, strong mover with high amount of combat]

Chiron- a part-time Latin teacher and a full time wise-old-mentor. Cryptic, blunt, grave. Think of Chiron like the human in a Muppet movie- comically deadly serious for how ridiculous his surroundings are. (Will also play various other ensemble roles including Hades, God of the dead and part time record producer) [Musical Theatre classical Baritone, mover, minimal combat]

Sally Jackson- Percy’s beloved mom who would do anything to protect her son. Loving, encouraging, surprisingly funny. Sally is Percy’s MacGuffin, but she charms the audience before her untimely demise. (Will also play various other ensemble roles including Silena Beauregard, a daughter of Aphrodite who just loves love) [Musical Theatre Alto with a ballad feel, mover with moderate combat]

Clarisse- a tough jock girl who’s out to prove she’s the meanest thing at Camp Half-Blood. Powerful, cool, a bully. Clarisse has some demanding belting to do! Think of her like a rockstar with a spear. (Will also play various other ensemble roles including Thalia, the only other child of the big three gods since the pact was made) [Rock and Roll Soprano Belt, strong mover with heavy combat]

Ariadne Track: Charon and others (Underworld ferryman by day, aspiring R&B artist a la Tina Turner by night) [MT Belter with R&B notes, strong mover with some combat]

Achilles Track: Ares and others (God of war who stepped out of a Harley-Davidson ad just to cause mayhem) [Rock and Roll Baritone, strong mover with heavy combat]

Helen Track: Katie/Aunty Em and others (A daughter of Demeter who believes in the integrity of the forest/An artist with a petrifying gaze [MT Mezzo with some folksy country twang, strong mover with some combat]

Hippolyta Track: Mrs. Dodds/The Oracle and others (A Southern lady with some pretty sharp fangs behind every Bless Your Heart/a mysterious mummy with a penchant for prophecy) [MT Alto with some operatic comic vibes, strong mover with heavy combat]

Orpheus Track: Mr. D/Poseidon and others (the long suffering head of Camp Half-Blood with a cosmic need for a drink/a strange man in a Hawaiian shirt) [MT Comic Baritenor, strong mover with some conbat]

Treble and Bass Swings: these two indispensable individuals will be understudies for every role within their voice type. They will need to be flexible and ready to hop in case of an emergency, but will also be members of the ensemble as well (don’t think that this means you won’t be onstage if there’s no chaos– that just means we get to make our own!!).
